A Day in the Life of a Pet Care Specialist

Today, I thought I’d share what a typical day in my life as a pet care specialist and business owner looks like. While it might seem like a dream job (and it often is), there’s so much more to it than cuddles and playtime!

Early Start with Calico Cuddles

After a late night tweaking my Terms & Conditions (fun, right?), my alarm went off at 7:30 am. With my own dogs off at the cabin with their dad, I was out the door by 7:45 for my first stop: Missy, a senior calico cat with the sweetest personality.

Missy needs medication twice a day, but she makes it so easy. She’s the kind of cat that makes you want to curl up with a blanket and purr alongside her!

Once she was taken care of, it was back to the office for more admin work. Updating policies and planning new services (like puppy and senior walks) took up my morning, followed by informing clients about these important updates. Keeping everyone informed is crucial, and while it’s not the cuddliest part of the job, it’s just as important.

Mid-Morning Madness

At 10:45 am, it was time for Norman, a senior pup on my regular roster. Since Norman can’t go all day without a potty break, I stopped by to save the day—and the carpet. Of course, he also got some treats, cuddles, and a little massage (because who doesn’t love a good massage?).

Next up were Pepper and Clover, my adorable puppy client and her big sister. Pepper is still learning the ropes of potty breaks and mealtime manners, so I helped her out while Clover kept me company.

Cold Weather Struggles

Quick pit stop at home to layer up - Canadian winters and I are not friends, even at only -10C. It was fleece-lined leggings, wool socks, and about a million layers later, I was back out the door!

Afternoon Fun & Furry Friends

At noon, I had a consult with a potential new client whose dog needs walks while she heals from an ankle injury. Then, it was off to visit Sam and Rusty. Rusty hasn’t been feeling his best lately, but I brought some vet recommended food to tempt him. Success! Rusty licked the bowl clean, and I swear his tail wagged harder than ever.

Sam, on the other hand, was all about the flirt pole - a fancy toy that’s basically a giant cat toy for dogs. It’s also a fun way to sneak in training commands like “wait” and “drop it.” He nailed his commands like a pro, and Rusty even joined in with a little ball-chasing action.

Dragons & Desk Time

Next up were Nacho and Mango, two bearded dragons - not the mythical kind, but just as cool! Their owner is away for work, so I made sure their tanks were cozy and they were well-fed.

Afterwards, I spent the rest of the afternoon at my desk catching up on client inquiries, planning social media posts, and tackling some less glamorous but essential tasks (like paying bills).

Evening Visits: Nails, Snacks, and Snuggles

At 4 pm, I met Howie and Ripley for a nail trim. Yesterday’s play session helped them warm up to me, so today’s trim went off without a hitch. Then, it was off to see Abby and Piper, my two food-loving besties. Shy Abby has come so far since I first met her—these moments remind me why I do what I do.

Finally, it was back to Missy for her evening medication, along with fresh water, food, and clean litter boxes.

More Than Meets the Eye

While the photos and summaries might make my job look simple, pet sitting involves a great deal of trust, responsibility, and expertise. I enter people’s homes—private spaces they entrust to me—and care for their beloved pets as if they were my own.

Every visit involves reading body language, ensuring safety, and adapting to each pet’s unique needs. Whether it’s monitoring Rusty’s health, helping Ripley and Howie feel comfortable during nail trims, or gaining Abby’s trust, every moment requires attention, patience, and skill.

Pet sitting isn’t just a job—it’s a passion. Days like today remind me why I love what I do: building trust with pets and their families, ensuring everyone feels cared for, and sharing those small moments of joy with furry (and scaly!) friends.

Thank you for trusting me with your pets—it’s an honor I never take lightly.

Until next time,

Amanda Sharp
